My Trip To Sri Lanka – Galle Face Green Beach, Resorts, and More!

Hi everyone, my name is Niya and I’m here to tell you about one of my recent adventures – to beautiful Sri Lanka, my homeland!

Sri Lanka is one of those countries that brings you so much warmth that you’re filled to the brim with joy and peace.

When I went there this past summer, it changed my perspective on a lot of things.

Sri Lanka, for those who don’t know, is located southeast of the Arabian Sea, and southwest of the Bay of Bengal.

Here’s a couple of maps to give it context.

People in North America stress too much about little things and let it ruin their day, and I’m guilty of that sometimes too if we’re being completely honest.

But, being Sri Lankan by heritage, I am drawn back there every so often.

Feeling that ocean breeze and just relaxing on the beach brought me an immense amount of happiness and peace.

Being surrounded by water, as Sri Lanka is basically a giant island, there are plenty of beaches you can visit – Unawatuna, Bentota, Arugam Bay, Mirissa, and many more!

I love visiting the beach myself, while in Sri Lanka.  The people, the sunsets, the atmosphere in general is phenomenal.

Overall, the experience is different than an experience you might have at a “western” beach, although there are commonalities.

I like that people even catch live fish their and they can cook it there too, and it is delicious.

When you eat live fish compared to frozen or store bought fish, you’ll never want to eat fish bought from the grocery store ever again.

But I do also have a favourite beach, which is Galle Face Green Beach.

Galle Face Green Beach

Galle Face Green Beach is located in the city of Colombo, the largest city and financial capital of Sri Lanka, home to almost 6 million people.

It’s not a huge area – the green (and there is actually a green) – only about 500 meters along the coast.

Here is a video showing what it is like there, if you’ve never seen it.

The reason this area is called Galle Face Green is because it was once used for horse racing, and numerous other sports such as rugby, tennis and golf.

This is why the area has its characteristic flat surface, because this flatness and evenness was needed for the horse racing that was done there in the previous decades.

When I was visiting, the entire Galle Face strip was filled with thousands of people, with tourists and local residents alike, unlike the picture above, where it looks fairly deserted.

When I was there recently, the strip was filled with food vendors selling chicken. Fish, popcorn, nuts, etc.

They were also selling souvenir items like magnets and t-shirts to name but a few things you can acquire there.

When I went into the ocean I could immediately tell how salty the water was just by the smell and feel of the water.

The current was so strong and the waves were getting bigger and bigger as the day went on. It’s not everyday one gets to be in the Indian ocean, and I was enjoying every bit of it.

Sri Lankan Resort Beaches

The beaches near the resorts were quite different compared to the Galle Face Green Beach, which is more for your average curious tourists who want to go to the center of the action, as it is, like I said, located in the capitol of Colombo where many people flock to.

The beaches in the resorts, in particular were breathtaking. One truly can’t even begin to imagine how beautiful these beaches were unless they’re there and experience it themselves.  Also, there are so many, I can even begin to name them all.

If you like tropical islands, then you will think this is paradise.

The palm trees, the blue ocean, the beautiful light sand, I’ve been to Cuban beaches before that were beautiful but this was an entirely different breathtaking experience altogether.

If you want to stay at a resort, there are a few options. You can stay at a resort hotel or you can stay in a villa. If you stay in a villa it is like staying in your own little house, it is really cool.

Not to mention the food at the resorts was amazing. There are even beaches where you can go whale and dolphin watching!

Unfortunately I never got to go whale and dolphin watching, but next time I go to Sri Lanka I will have to experience that.

It’s a long trip to go to Sri Lanka from Canada, but it is well worth it. The food, the people, the atmosphere, everything is just amazing there.

Wrapping Up

I love Canada (where I live), but Sri Lanka was a nice getaway from reality. As beautiful of a country that Canada is, the beaches in Canada are not comparable to the beaches in Sri Lanka.

The warm deep blue water, the beautiful sand and the palm trees everywhere, the atmosphere is completely different.

Sri Lanka is so filled with warm and kind people, and it just made the trip that much more special.
