The Battle Of The Summertime Eyeshadow Primers – High End Edition
I get it. You want to do everything that summer calls for, like late night strolls, barbeques with your favorite people, and lots of summer sports. And let’s be real here, summer is definitely great for so many reasons.
Summertime really does mean amazing weather, the revival of your favorite outfits, and an excuse to go for a dip. However, with all good, comes some bad. The summer season also calls for an overwhelming amount of heat waves, all of which ‘graduated with a degree’ in melting your favorite makeup off of your face.
To put it simply, when we use our makeup, our face is like a cake. (Pro tip: the objective when applying makeup is to avoid your face from looking like a cake… Just remember the whole cake thing is a metaphor.) You have your base, which consists of skin products such as face primer, foundation, concealer, powder, etc. Moving onto the frosting, you have your eyeshadow primer, eyeshadow, mascara, eyebrow necessities, and eyeliner. The candles consist of highlight and contour, blush, and lip products that give each look that extra amp.
For this article, we will be focusing on how to ensure that the frosting of your cake, particularly your eyeshadow, will be able to withstand the humidity.
As a makeup lover, I have had my fair share of eyeshadow primers, and after years of test drives, smashed tubes, and relocations into the “holy grail drawer”, I am fairly confident in my final verdicts.
I will be the first to say that drugstore makeup, or “low – end” makeup, is just as good as makeup with a heftier price tag. However, it seems almost a bit overbearing to try and incorporate so many products into one article, seeing that we will be tuning in on both the best, and worst eyeshadow primers. If you are in the market to purchase a high end eyeshadow primer that will help you overcome those hot summer days, keep reading.
My Holy Grail: This was my first high end beauty purchase, and looking back now, with all of my knowledge and insight into the beauty world, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. With over 5000 Sephora reviews and a whopping four and a half stars out of five, you guessed it, it is none other than Urban Decay’s Primer Potion.
Not only does this primer make eyeshadow stay put through everything, including a night of rest, and a soccer tournament in ninety degree weather ( don’t ask ), but it’s also suitable for a variety of skin types, and comes in a multitude of shades, depending on what kind of look you are trying to achieve.
Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, combination skin, or mature skin, the Urban Decay Primer Potion will provide you with a crease resistant, long lasting, and color correcting tool.
A Must Have: Mac Painterly Paint Pot is a pale mauve, flesh toned primer, and it is raved about, and used by many prestigious makeup artists for a reason.
Not only is it highly pigmented, which calls for amazing coverage to hide discoloration and veins, but it also has great bendability, and is able to intensify eyeshadow colors, making them resemble accurately to their pan form.
The Black Horse: Like many makeup newbies, when I was researching which eyeshadow primer I first wanted to splurge on, I was torn between the ‘Too Faced Shadow Insurance Primer’ and the ‘Urban Decay Primer Potion’.
Although both brands are famously known for their astonishing lines of eye products, both primers also have been competing neck and neck in regards to their popularity and presence on the internet. Although the wear time of the Urban Decay Primer Potion is unbeatable, the T.F.S.I.P comes close behind with a great wear time, amazing blendability and also, crease resistance.
You Can’t Win A Race With A Bad Engine: Although I love this product’s body, with it’s easily accessible doe foot applicator, and the universal shade which is great for color correcting, the ‘Smashbox Photo Finish Lid Primer’ fell short in this race.
I noticed that it began to ball up, making my eyeshadow appear clumpy in certain areas of my eye, notably the crease area, which then smudged onto my lashes and towards my brow bone. To put it simply, it was a disaster. By the end of the night, my eyeshadow was completely ruined, and the small remains that were left, still appeared to be worn down.
This Is One Flight You Will Want To Miss: When you read about the claims of the ‘Air Patrol BB Cream Eyelid Primer’ by Benefit Cosmetics, you may want to pinch yourself, because it really does sound that good.
Benefit Cosmetics, I must give you props on your new innovative line of makeup, which caters more towards preserving the skin, by focusing on ingredients that benefit the skin. However, in terms of this product as a primer, it falls short. Not only is this product a vibrant yellow base which would work against pale skin, it wears off almost immediately, providing your eyeshadow with a patchy finish. Like most Sephora reviews urge, please stay away from this product!
