If you’re going to the beach this summer, and plan on being in the water out past your waist, it is highly recommended that you learn how to swim.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, or how big you are, there are water safety concerns to think about if you plan on frolicking out in the waves past a certain point. Do not underestimate things like tides and undertows – they are forces of nature that act quickly, and can be unpredictable.

Even if you do know how to swim, owning a good all purpose life vest/jacket can be highly beneficial for many reasons.

Many water-based activities simply require you to bring a life jacket out of common sense – people that do various kinds of boating, such as rafting, canoeing, or kayaking, always wear a life jacket as a matter of course.

Whether you’re on the boat, or behind it, flying along on a towable of some sort, you should be wearing one.

If you have a few minutes, here is a video brought to us by the Coast Guard, which demonstrates why it is so important to have a life jacket on, when you’re on the water. These are situations you do not want to find yourself in!

Worn For Survival But Fashionable As Well

Life jackets, like the one we’re reviewing today by Sterns, is not so much concerned with being a fashion statement, as much as it is providing you with a way to NOT drown, if you happen to wipe out while learning to water ski, fall out of your canoe, or have any number of unfortunate accidents. Particularly if you’re a non-swimmer, and you’re out on the water, wearing a life jacket is essential.

While we say that the focus is not on fashion for Stearns, we must say that these life jackets do look nice and sporty, and can be worn for any number of activities. With its nylon shell, durable Crosstech PE foam, and its three 1-in.

(2.54 cm) adjustable webbed straps, the bottom line here is, that these Stearns life jackets are meant to be worn to keep you afloat, and that’s what they do!

They are even Coast Guard-approved, which means that they have been put through rigorous water safety tests to ensure maximum effectiveness.

So, it’s no big shock that customer reviews for these Stearns life jackets have generally been very favorable, especially on websites like Amazon, where users can list all of their complaints, and quite often do.

Universal And Oversized Sizes

This is not advertised as a child’s life jacket, but rather one which can be worn by anyone who is 90 pounds or above. Some people do put them on their kids, but this is not what Stearns advertises (they say this life jacket will fit “most adults”).

Of course, there will be a point where the universal size might not fit some big or tall people, and that is when you can order the oversized version. The sides of these life jackets are open for a more comfortable fit, and you can adjust them to your preference.

You wouldn’t want them to be too comfortable, as they are meant to be snug enough to do their job, when your inflatable hits a huge wave and you are sent face first into the surf. That is the time when you will be glad to be wearing one of these Stearns life jackets.
