Water guns have been a true nationwide hit on the toy market since Super Soakers first arrived 1990, but American kids have been loving “squirt guns” since as far back as 1896, when the toys first appeared.
Christmas and birthday wish lists frequently feature water guns, for both boys and girls, whether they be big or small water launchers or mid-sized – just getting any kind of water gun is a blast because they’re just plain fun and kids and adults alike know it. They also bring kids together – into battle, that is!
On a hot summer day, a good water fight is always welcome! Whooo-weee!
BENEFITS OF WATER GUNS: Kids also benefit from being able to organize rules for games they invent, which gets them moving, involves strategy, stimulates imagination, and teaches them about fair conduct.
It could also just be mayhem, which is sometimes fun as well so long as no one gets a Super Soaker blast right in their face. Water safety rules when it comes to water fights generally do apply here, so don’t ignore those as the person supervising any kind of water battle royale between all the neighbourhood kiddos.
Overall, water guns are just great for being the heat!
WHO MAKES THE BEST? In recent times, water gun manufacturers like Nerf, XShot, Tobeape, and Joyin have designed their water guns to hold more water, fire farther, have special pump action, launch more water, and be easily to hold and carry. There are lots more brands who make quality water guns, and then lots who make guns that don’t stack up.
The problem is, not all kids’ water guns are made to last, or even work that well at all. Some are made extremely cheaply, and some just have problems with the way they were designed in the first place, so you don’t want to be buying one of those duds.
That’s why we’ve taken the time to do the research to see which of these water guns could be considered the best, and we happily present that research here to you!
Don’t be surprised that many of these are Nerf, who basically are the biggest name in the game with some of the best models around.
- HITOP Water Gun
- HD JUNTUNKOR Water Gun
- Super Soaker Tri Strike Crossbow
- SINTECHNO Water Gun
- Nerf Super Soaker Hydro Cannon
Let’s check these out!
HITOP Water Gun
What we Like
- Shoots up to 35 feet
- Thick, durable plastic
- Even little kids under 5 years old can operate it
- Super capacity 36 oz
- Comes in a 2-pack
- Customers have found it not to be leaky (like some others)
- Can be used to wash your car or truck
Weighing in at around 2.4 pounds, with dimensions of 16.5 x 8.7 x 3.2 inches, the HITOP squirt gun here is great because it manages to not screw up the basics of what makes a good water gun.
And, to state the obvious, a good water gun does what we mentioned above – it doesn’t leak, it shoots far, has good water pressure, is easy for anyone, including little kids, to use. It also isn’t too expensive, but you can tell that what you do pay actually goes towards making the gun better.
Aesthetically, we love these HITOP water guns. Why?
Well, for a number of reasons. First off, they’re colourful. The colour scheme of these guns make them actually look fun to use, because they’re all bright, primary colours.
Looks-wise, they look like a cross between some kind of Star Wars laser and an actual semi-automatic rifle, so they have a touch of realism, but they don’t look threatening and kids that have used them have immediately just seen them and wanted to grab them and go use them.
So in that sense, above all else, these water guns are practical. The build quality is great, quite easy to use, and that makes them great for all sorts of games that can keep kids occupied for hours during those scorching days of summer.
HD JUNTUNKOR Water Gun
What we Like
- 800 CC capacity
- Easy to handle grip
- Easy for kids to handle
- Weight of 1.85 pounds
- non-toxic ABS materials
- No sharp edges
- Fires water up to 40 feet
Despite the weird name, these HD JUNTUNKOR water guns are actually pretty good. They are very similar to the previous pick, the HITOP pistols, in terms of look and feel.
They also come in a two pack, which is quite convenient if you have more than one kid who is going to want to play with one. Of course, this is usually the case, and it’s good to have more than one of these pistols handy.
In terms of size and weight, they 15.3 x 7.9 x 5.5 inches and 1.85 pounds, and so as compared with the previous pick, they are slightly lighter and smaller, and so they are a bit better for smaller kids who want to get in on the action.
If you get this water pistols in the two-pack, you will find that there is a slightly different colour scheme for each, helping to distinguish one from the other. This is good for letting each of your kids have their own gun, and not fight over whose is whose.
This gun claims to fire a whopping 40 feet, which is 5 feet farther than the HITOP, however we only found that these guns fired up to 30-ish feet. Still a fair distance!
In addition, these guns float, so if they fall into the pool, they don’t sink to the bottom. They’re extremely easy to lock and load and one full tank of water lasts several minutes.
Nerf Super Soaker Tri Strike Crossbow
What we like:
- Cool crossbow shape (if desired)
- Good pump action
- 40 ounce capacity
- Ability to aim it differently
- Part of the super soaker family
- 3 stream action (if desired) or one single stream
- 40 foot range
Now we get to the Super Soakers, the water cannon that has been blasting their way onto Xmas wish lists for decades now and counting. Once the company joined forces with Nerf, some truly interesting weaponry came out of that union.
If you are a fan of Super Soakers, this is a unique model that you and your kids might enjoy – the Nerf Tri Strike Crossbow. With its different aesthetic, some kids will appreciate this design for the fact that it is not a normal water gun, as it has some nifty deployable crossbow arms.
For a day at the beach, or if you’re up at the lake, water fights are common, and this is the type of water weapon that is certainly welcome to the party, because it’s different, but not too different.
As with the other water guns, the only trouble you can have is when you fire it too close to someone’s face. This is the only real no-no with this or any of the guns on this list, as they can be quite powerful with their water blasts.
Once again, this water gun / crossbow is meant for kids, and it also provides some different shooting options where you can switch to 3 streams (in crossbow mode of course) instead of one, with the flip of a switch. Obviously, the single stream can shoot farther, but there is something very fun about having multiple streams going.
When the gun is in its regular gun mode, it operates great as a water gun with it’s long range, easy re-loading, and good pump action. You don’t have a trigger, it’s just using the pump to shoot.
Super Soaker Switch Shot Blaster
Yet another pump-action Super Soaker – an absolute classic – which has the look and feel of an uzi. Some kids aren’t exactly obsessed with their water guns looking like real guns, but some are, and those kids will love this one!
Its lightweight feel, in combination with its compact shape (you can take the back stock off if you want), make it the perfect water gun for those that wish to run around, but still have the ability to jump and dive because this weapon is actually ergonomic.
We feel that this water blaster is just very well balanced overall. The fact that there are detachable clips coupled with the very compact and small size of this gun, is what makes it absolutely phenomenal in what it can do.
The Super Soaker Switch Shot fires up to 25 feet, which is quite an impressive distance considering its fairly compact size. It also allows one to carry multiple banana clips, so that you can actually ‘reload’ on your enemies!
With its compact nature, refillable and detachable clip, along with its precision in aim, and simplicity of function, this water baby is easily one of the best that you can find on the market.
We also love how it integrates a lot of the classic aspects of a water gun, such as the pump-action features, as well as various methods of spray to maximize the amount of soakage that one can get out of the gun.
If you’re looking to have a ton of fun, and leave your foes drenched this summer, then this maybe the perfect water gun for you!
On to the next one…
Nerf Super Soaker Hydro Cannon
The Hydro Cannon is yet another Super Soaker with a unique functionality, acting like a water bazooka. We do love it, but we also see it as more of a part of a larger arsenal of water-spewing weapons. We’ll tell you why.
The toy comes with a solid pump-action mechanism that you need to pump rigorously, but allows for very powerful single shots. Very similar to the Hasbro Super Soaker Aqua Shock HydroBlitz, if you’ve ever seen one of those.
So, yes, when you pick up and use this blaster, keep in mind that you are pumping for one big water blast, not an ongoing stream like most guns. Some kids will love this blaster because the blast is quite awesome, especially when it hits its target.
Add to that that this Super Soaker can blast enemies who are approximately 30 feet away, which is additionally impressive to see one big blast go that far. This is why this water blaster is popular, we think, because is can be quite dramatic for little kids to use.
Still, you should note that this isn’t your typical water gun, and while some kids may love this cannon for how it works (single shots, lots of pumping), others will not understand it and may not like it. It is certainly a lot different than most typical water guns, because it is a cannon.
