Alright, on to the good stuff!

Metal Detector Benefits

metal detector treasure hunting
  • The most obvious benefit of getting a good metal detector is that you can actually find things of value that have been lost, whether its gold, old coins, or old relics and other artifacts that may have a high level of antique or historical value.
  • Whether you realize it or not, metal detecting is good for your health, because you are outside, and some metal detecting trips can be long and arduous.  Before you know it, you’ve gone on a long hike and you’ve got your daily recommended 10 000 steps in as well!
  • In a word: strategy! I don’t know about you, but when I go out hunting for treasure, I use a variety of strategies to determine where to go, how to look, and so forth. Being a treasure hunter might sound like a fun pastime, and it most certainly is, but you aren’t going to find anything if you don’t have some kind of plan or theory as to the treasure hunting methods you’ll be using.
  • In another word: community!  Metal detector users – much like motorcycles, comic book collectors, bird watchers, and anything else that has a dedicated group of hardcore followers – have their own community that you can be a part of anytime you feel like connecting.

Here’s a video about treasure hunting on the beach that shows some of the kinds of things you can find when hunting properly.

Alright, now that we know about some of the benefits, people are always asking me…

Do People Actually Find Valuable Items with Metal Detectors?

metal detecting treasure hunting

Yes!  You won’t believe some of the things people have found with metal detectors.  And it’s not all the types of “treasure” you might expect.  Some of the things people find can be real head scratchers!

Of course, finding actual treasure is often a huge draw to purchasing a metal detector, hobbyists usually state that the biggest reward of using a metal detector is the love of the hobby itself, as well as the adrenaline rush from digging up a new find, regardless of its value on the market, so to speak.

Here are a few examples of some ridiculous finds people have uncovered using metal detectors.

[ps2id id=’anchor3′ target=”/]

Ok! Moving on…

Do you need a licence to own a metal detector?

No! You don’t need a licence to own a metal detector. In most cases you don’t need a licence to use it either.

metal detector license required?

Of course, you might need to ask for permission to metal detect or dig in some state properties, such as public parks, beaches or battle sites.

But hey, there are a lot of places that require no permissions to metal detect or dig.

[ps2id id=’anchor4′ target=”/]

Just remember to do a quick research about the places you would love to go to search for treasure. A quick research will keep you out of trouble.

What Makes a Good Metal Detector?

Depth of the detection

Depth of detection should be one of the primary factors to consider before purchasing a metal detector of any sort.

The greater the depth, the greater the range of items that one can discover.  This depends on how the detector functions, primarily based on its coil size.

metal detector detection depth

For example, if you get a hobbyist metal detector, it is designed to find you certain items that aren’t, say, buried 1 meter underground. For that you’ll be needing a 2-box metal detector, which can detect items that are over a meter deep.

Of course, this would require some ambitious digging, but the point is, be aware of how deep it can detect and its range of detection in general.

Here’s a quick guide to the depth at which some objects are buried.

  • Small jewelry – 7 – 15 cm
  • Big jewelry – 15 to 30 cm
  • Small coins – 10 to 15 cm
  • Large coins – 15 to 30 cm
  • Jam jar lid,  bicycle licence disc – 22 to 40 cm
  • Coffee can size – 30 to 60 cm
  • Cannon shell, etc. – 60 to 90 cm
[ps2id id=’anchor5′ target=”/] Moving on to Ease of Operation

Ease of Operation

Depending on how experienced you are, looking for something easier to use will be a big factor in the metal detector that you choose.  You may need it to be dead easy at first.

If you’re relatively new to the hobby of using metal detectors, then it would be best if you got a ‘simpler’ metal detector with less features and options.  This will make it less expensive to buy, but also easier for beginners to use, perhaps.

However, if you are particularly experienced, then you’re going to want to get a metal detector that has all of the ‘bells and whistles’, so to speak.  That said, some metal detectors which are more expensive have the luxury of being simply more effective, making them easier to use.

[ps2id id=’anchor6′ target=”/]

Later, when we talk about the best metal detectors we know of, you’ll see some of the factors that make a metal detector easier to use or not so much quite clearly.

What Are You Looking For?

Depending upon whether you’re looking to ‘shoot’ coins (hobbyist lingo for metal detecting specifically for the purpose of finding coins) or find gold, you will need to find a metal detector that is maximized for your specific endeavor.

Some people who buy metal detectors are happy to find just about anything (at first), while others go towards purchasing a metal detector that can help them find things like money, etc.

So that’s the question you should ask before buying – What do I want to find, exactly?

For instance, this guy here found an old rusty abandoned safe.  Would you be happy with such a find?

[ps2id id=’anchor7′ target=”/]

Now, where do you plan on using it?

Where Are You Planning on Using It?

I like using my metal detector at the beach, however, if you’re planning on using it elsewhere, then it would be wise to find a metal detector that is optimized for locating items within your target terrain.

Some people actually make special trips to go where they think (or know, as it were) the most valuables can be found.  To some, a metal detector is just an excuse to go on an adventure, and that’s great!  I love this philosophy, actually.

Point being, think about where you’ll be going with your metal detector and buy one accordingly, ie. beach, a rocky area, a forest path, a muddy bog.  Where are you headed?

[ps2id id=’anchor8′ target=”/]

But, can they help you find gold?

Do metal detectors find gold?

Yes, metal detectors can detect any metal, including gold.

metal detecting gold mine

However, not all metal detectors are as efficient in detecting gold. Some metal detectors work better than others.

Modern prospecting detectors can discover gold as small as a grain of rice at the depths of up to 20 centimeters.

Professional metal detectors can detect large nuggets at up to 50 centimeters or deeper.

If you are looking for a professional metal detector specially made for detecting gold, consider having a look at Garrett AT Gold Metal Detector.

Garrett AT Gold detector includes 18kHZ frequency for enhanced detection of small gold nuggets, coins, jewelry and relics.

It is one of the most versatile detectors on the market. It is incredibly fun and easy to use.

It is a perfect choice for those who want to primarily focus on gold prospecting, but occasionally want to do some coin or treasure hunting as well.

Let’s see where you can use metal detectors.

Where can you use metal detectors?

Once you have yourself a metal detector and you are all set to go on a hunt for treasure, where do you go? How do you know if you are allowed to metal detect and dig in specific places?

Well, we suggest you keep reading. We are about to dig into this question.

Some of the best and most interesting places for looking for hidden treasure are:

  • Private properties
  • Beaches
  • Parks
  • Old/abandoned homes
  • Battle sites

Although these places could be hiding treasure, they are sometimes off limits.

Speaking about private properties, the laws are simple and clear. You can metal detect and dig as long as you own the property or you have permission of the owner.

Beaches and parks are common destinations for those looking for treasure. However, many are unaware that although metal detecting in these places is allowed, digging is very often forbidden. Yes, you’ve read correctly!

Beaches and parks are usually state properties, which means everything buried there belongs to the state. So, you could hit the jackpot and find a treasure, but you could face lawsuits if you tried to dig it out.

Old and abandoned homes can also be off limits. As with private properties, you need to own these locations or to have permission of the owner.

Battle sites are probably the most interesting places to metal detect. Most of the battle sites are well documented and easy to access.

However, before heading for ‘D day’ beaches, make sure to double check whether you are allowed to metal detect and dig those places.

Digging is forbidden at some battle sites as they are culturally and historically significant locations.

Did you ever consider using Google Earth to find great metal detecting sites?

No?

Garrett Ace 250

One of our top choices has got to be the Garrett Ace 250 which offers great features at affordable price – excellent detection depth, rugged design and ease of operation.

Garrett is well known for making high quality metal detectors for many years now, and they are a favorite of both experienced hunters and novices

Although it is sometimes described as a “beginner’s detector”, it has many functions that can only be found on the upper-end detectors.

I love how simple the detector’s face is.  Everything you need to know is well laid out, resulting in a metal detector which is very easy to operate, once you get the hang of it.

Of course, a beginner will need to study all of the different functions, but it is really no different than getting yourself a new iPhone in terms of complexity.
