A Great Spinning Reel

If fishing is your passion, and you love using a spinning reel to do it, you probably want the best on the market today.  We have tried to narrow this down for you to save you some time, because we understand that you would rather be out there fishing.

Before we present you with our top 5 best spinning reels, let’s consider some important specs about reels.

The Drag System is important.

The fish takes the bait, and now the adventure begins.  This adventure between Man and Fish, is all about a very important relationship with the reel, the line, the hook, the bait, the water, and the fish.  You want it all to run as smooth as possible.  You don’t need any breaks or jerking.  Do you want a reel with a front dial, or a rear knob to assist you with the smoothness?  It will be you controlling the tension on the spool by turning something.  You probably already know that you get what you pay for.  You know that high quality equipment costs more.

Most spinning reels come in different sizes, and as the spool size increases, the line capacity increases.  Are you using monofilament or braided lines?  Which kind of line is more suited to the kind of fish you are after?  Lots to think about right!

The Weight is important!

Most reels are made from plastic, aluminum, carbon, or magnesium.  The plastic and aluminum are the most common, cheaper, but not that durable.  Carbon and magnesium reels don’t weigh as much, and are more expensive.  They are a lot stronger too.

The Line Recovery Rate is important!

If you turn the spool once, how much line in inches comes back.  Spinning reels usually can recover more line per turn than a bait caster.  Be aware of the number.

The Bearings are important!

The handle turns the spool, and the bearings make all this happen smoothly.  It isn’t how many bearings are used in the spool that matters, you just want enough to do the jobs required.  One bearing is needed on the main handle shaft.  One bearing is needed to assist the main gear.  You want your anti-reverse to run smoothly, so a bearing is needed there.  Finally, the 4th bearing is needed for the line roller.  We will call that one the roller bearing.  Don’t pay for more if you don’t need them.

The Anti-Reverse is important!

You certainly don’t want everything to suddenly unwind.  Check to see if the reel has a black lever or switch near the reel’s butt.  Some anglers leave the anti-reverse switch in the ‘on’ position always, while others sometimes switch it ‘off’ so they can enjoy the struggle when fighting a big fish, or one in a strong current.

Shimano Stradic Ci4+FB Spinning Reel

Shimano Stradic ci4

Shimano totally revamped this reel just for you.  They even lost weight.  They moved the oscillating system and worm drive closer to the stern, which changes the reel’s centre of gravity, thus it feels lighter.  It also has the latest Magnumlite rotor, and none of its competitors do.  The rotation is more stable, but still the strength and rigidity is there.  Shimano didn’t stop there.  They added a protective water repellent coating in the roller clutch, and the line roller.  No water can get inside this reel.  The icing on the cake is Shimano’s Hagane Gears, which are smoother and stronger than all others. Wow!
